How to use the Tip Calculator

  1. 1 Enter the bill amount.
  2. 2 Choose a tip percentage.
  3. 3 Set the number of people to split between.

How the tip and split are calculated

The calculator makes three straightforward calculations from the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people:

  • tip = bill × percent / 100
  • total = bill + tip
  • per person = total ÷ people

The preset buttons set the percentage to 10, 15, 18 or 20, and you can type any other value in the Tip field. The number of people cannot go below 1. All three results are shown with two decimal places, and the split is equal, so the tool does not handle one person ordering more than another.

Worked example

A 50.00 bill with an 18% tip gives a tip of 9.00 and a total of 59.00. Split between 2 people, each pays 29.50. Changing the percentage to 20% on the same bill gives a tip of 10.00, a total of 60.00 and 30.00 each. A move from 18% to 20% costs the table 1.00 in total on a bill of that size.

Pitfalls and edge cases

  • Which amount to tip on. The tool tips whatever number you type in the Bill field. If you enter the pre-tax subtotal, the tip is smaller than if you enter the total on the receipt. On a 50.00 subtotal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is 10.00 on the subtotal but 10.80 on the 54.00 total. Neither is wrong; custom differs.
  • Service charges. If the bill already includes a service charge, adding a tip on top may mean you tip twice. Check the receipt before using a preset.
  • Uneven splits. Dividing 137.40 by 3 gives exactly 45.80, but many totals do not divide evenly and the shown per-person figure is rounded to the cent, so three payments of the rounded amount can be a cent off the real total.
  • Local norms. Tipping expectations vary a lot between countries and between types of service, and in some places a service charge is already built into prices. Treat the presets as a convenience, not as a recommendation.

When you need to add the tax to a bill first, use the sales tax calculator. For any other percentage calculation, the percentage calculator covers the three common forms.

Examples

  • ▸ 50 bill, 18% tip, 2 people: 9.00 tip, 59.00 total, 29.50 each.
  • ▸ 120 bill, 20% tip, 4 people: 24.00 tip, 144.00 total, 36.00 each.

Frequently asked questions

What is a standard tip percentage?

In the US, 15–20% is common for table service. Norms vary by country, so adjust the percentage to your local custom.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customarily you tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the total for simplicity. Enter whichever amount you prefer to base the tip on.

How does splitting the bill work?

The tool divides the bill plus tip evenly by the number of people, so each person pays an equal share including their portion of the gratuity.

How much is an 18% tip on a 50 bill split two ways?

The tip is 9.00 and the total is 59.00, so each person pays 29.50. At 20% the tip is 10.00 and each person pays 30.00.

Does the split handle people who ordered different amounts?

No. It divides the bill plus tip equally. For uneven orders, run each person's own items through the calculator separately with the same tip percentage.
