Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax on a purchase?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate as a decimal (rate ÷ 100) to get the tax amount, then add it to the price for the total. For 100 at 7.25%, that is 100 × 0.0725 = 7.25 tax, for a 107.25 total.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a total that includes tax?

Divide the total by (1 + rate/100). A 107.25 total at 7.25% tax gives 107.25 ÷ 1.0725 = 100 pre-tax, so the tax portion is 7.25.

What are typical US state sales tax rates?

Base statewide rates vary widely, for example roughly California 7.25%, Texas 6.25%, Florida 6%, Washington 6.5%, Colorado 2.9%, and a handful of states (like Oregon and Montana) charge no state sales tax at all. Many states also add city or county tax on top, so your actual combined rate is often higher — check your local rate for an exact figure.

Is sales tax the same as VAT or GST?

No. US sales tax is only charged once, at the final retail sale. VAT/GST (used in most other countries) is charged at each stage of production and is usually included in the sticker price. For GST-style calculations, use the GST calculator instead.
