How to use the Age Calculator

  1. 1 Enter the date of birth.
  2. 2 Optionally set the "age at" date (defaults to today).
  3. 3 See the exact age and days until the next birthday.

How the age is worked out

The calculator reads both dates as calendar dates in your own time zone (today is your local date, so on your birthday the countdown shows 0). It counts the whole months between the date of birth and the "age at" date (today if you leave it blank), dropping one month if the day-of-month has not been reached yet, and splits that into years and months. The days are what remains between that month anniversary and the target date, using the real length of each month.

Two extra figures sit beside the breakdown. Total days is the number of calendar days between the two dates, so daylight saving changes do not add or remove a day. Next birthday in builds the birthday in the target year and, if it has already passed, moves it to the following year before counting the days.

Worked example

Born 15 March 2000, measured on 6 October 2026. The month difference is 26 years and 7 months, but the 6th has not reached the 15th yet, so one month is dropped, leaving 26 years and 6 months. The last anniversary, 15 September 2026, is 21 days before 6 October. The age is 26 years, 6 months, 21 days, which is 9,701 days in total. The next birthday is 15 March 2027, 160 days after that date.

Edge cases and common mistakes

  • Born on 29 February. In a non-leap year the calendar has no 29 February, so the birthday countdown targets 1 March. The years/months/days breakdown follows the plain date arithmetic above, with a day that does not exist in a month counted from the month's last day. Legal systems differ on whether the birthday is 28 February or 1 March, so check the rule that applies to you for things like licences.
  • Total days versus years × 365. Multiplying years by 365 ignores leap days, so it undercounts by roughly one day every four years. The total shown here uses real dates.
  • Date of birth after the target date. The tool shows a prompt instead of a negative age. Swap the dates or fix a typo in the year.
  • Ages in other cultures. This is the Western "completed years" age. East Asian age-counting traditions, where a baby is one at birth, give a different number, and the tool does not offer that mode.

Useful ways to use the "age at" box

Enter a past date to learn how old someone was at an event, or a future date to check eligibility, such as whether a child will meet a school cut-off on 1 September. To measure between two arbitrary dates without the birthday logic, use the date difference calculator. The countdown timer is better for a live countdown to a single event.

Examples

  • ▸ Born 15 Mar 2000, measured on 6 Oct 2026: 26 years, 6 months, 21 days (9,701 days). Next birthday in 160 days.
  • ▸ Set "age at" to 1 Sep 2026 to check whether a child born on 12 Nov 2020 meets a school cut-off age.

Frequently asked questions

Does it account for leap years?

Yes. The calculation uses real calendar dates, so leap years and varying month lengths are handled correctly.

Can I calculate age on a future or past date?

Yes. Set the "age at" date to any date — future or past — to find how old someone is or was on that specific day.

How is the time until the next birthday counted?

The tool finds the next upcoming birthday from the target date and shows the exact number of days remaining, accounting for leap years. On the birthday itself it shows 0 days.

How many days old am I?

The "Total days" box shows the whole days between your date of birth and the target date. Someone born on 15 March 2000 is 9,701 days old on 6 October 2026.

What happens if I was born on 29 February?

In years without a 29 February, the next-birthday countdown aims at 1 March. Which day counts as your legal birthday in a non-leap year depends on the country and the rule in question.
